Retired Horticulturalist Dies

Hesso Veendorp, 71, who served for 32 years as curator of the Botanical Gardens at Leyden University in The Netherlands, died Jan. 8 at his home in Leeuwarden.

Mr. Veendorp was the father of Gary Veendorp, editorial assistant of the Mennonite Weekly Review.

The funeral was conducted Saturday afternoon, Jan. 10, at the Leeuwarden Mennonite Church with Dr. J. T. Nielsen and Rev. G. Wassing officiating. Burial (cremation) was to take place Jan. 13 at Groningen.

A graduate of the horticultural college at Frederiksoord, Mr. Veendorp was superintendent of the botanical gardens at Oxford University in England for a time during World War I. In 1963, upon his retirement from the curatorship at Leyden University, Queen Juliana made him a Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau. He was co-author of a 218-page book, “1587-1937 Hortus Academicus Lugduno Batavus, The Development of the Gardens at Leyden University.”

He received the honorary degree of Professional Engineer from his alma mater in 1969. He was also the recipient of a special award from the Dutch Society of Floriculture and Botany.

In 1965 Mr. Veendorp attended the triennial session of the General Conference Mennonite Church at Estes Park, Colo. as an official delegate of the Dutch Mennonite Church.

His first marriage was to Jitske v. d. Goot, who died in 1963. In 1968 he married the former Fern Conradi, who survives. Also surviving are his son and daughter-in-law of Newton, and one daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Dolf Meijer of Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
