BRAZIL IN TURMOIL, AFTER PRESIDENT'S SUICIDE
The suicide of its 71-year-old President Getulio Vargas threw Brazil into dangerous turmoil last week, with bloody demonstrations in several large cities.
Vargas was succeeded in office by Vice-President Joao Cafe Filho, but a general strike immediately threatened to overthrow the new government.
Funeral services for Vargas were held in the town hall of his native prairie village of Sao Borja and burial made in the Vargas family mausoleum. He was denied final rites of the Roman Catholic Church because he had taken his own life.
