Minnesota Pioneer Dies at Mt. Lake

Mt. Lake, Minn. — Funeral services for Mrs. Maria P. Unruh, 90, pioneer Mennonite immigrant to Minnesota from South Russia in the year of her birth, were held at the E. M. B. Church here early in the new year.

Mrs. Unruh died at her home n Mt. Lake on Dec. 29. The former Maria Tieszen, she was born to Mr. and Mrs. Dietrich Tieszen in Russia on May 17, 1878 while the family was traveling. They arrived in America on July 6, and settled in Jackson County, Minn., which was her home for 33 years. She was married to John P. Unruh in 1896 and in 1911 they moved to a farm in Cottonwood County, retiring to Mt. Lake in 1927. Mr. Unruh died in 1947.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Peter Schmidt of Freeman, S. D., Maria of the home, and Mrs. John (Helena) Schmidt, a missionary in Bolivia.
