Traffic Accidents Claim Two Lives In Central Kansas

Two traffic accidents the past week in McPherson and on Highway 81 near Hesston claimed the lives of two persons.

Mrs. Delores Unruh, 31, wife of Roy D. Unruh who teaches in the McPherson High School, was fatally injured Thursday afternoon, Oct. 10, when struck by a car while walking in the McPherson business district.

Mrs. Unruh was walking down a sidewalk with her daughter, Joni Lynn,4, when a car driven by Henry Hildebrand, 83, of Inman jumped the curb and struck Mrs. Unruh and another woman pedestrian. The car continued through the front of a vacant store, dragging the two women with it.

Joni Lynn and another woman were knocked to one side by the auto and escaped serious injury.

Mrs. Unruh was the former Delores Carlson of Inman. Her funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Hoffnungsau church near Inman, with Rev. Wm. J. Nelson of McPherson officiating. She leaves her husband and two small daughters, Sherilynn, 7, and Joni Lynn, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Carlson.

A two-car clash south of Hesston on Highway 81 early Sunday morning resulted in instant death for Peter Neufeld, 44, of Newton.

Mr. and Mrs. Neufeld were returning from a visit in McPherson when their car was hit by one coming from the opposite direction, driven by a 19-year-old Fort Riley soldier. Mrs. Neufeld was taken to Bethel Deaconess Hospital for treatment of a fractured left arm, lacerations and abrasions.

Mr. Neufeld was born in Russia and came to the U. S. from Germany in 1951. He was employed here as a cabinet maker. Surviving in addition to the widow are three sons, Peter, Jr., Gerhard and Hans, three grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Richard Dobel and Mrs. Karl Muller [sic Mueller], all of Newton.

Funeral services were held Wednesday forenoon at the First Mennonite Church in Newton, Rev. Arnold Epp, officiating.
