SUSAN UNRUH
Susan Unruh, daughter of Jacob P. and Helena Dirks Unruh, was born April 25, 1905 at Marion, S. D. and passed away at the Halstead, Kan. Hospital May 15, 1963. She reached the age of 58 years and 20 days.
When she was nine years and four months old her mother passed away.
In 1920 she came with her father and sisters to live on a farm three miles west of Halstead which they had purchased.
She was converted and gave her heart to the Lord, and upon the confession of her faith was baptized and added to the Church of God in Christ Mennonite Jan. 25, 1937.
She had a cheerful disposition, was a lover of children and took great interest in the aged and sick, bringing them cheer and comfort by her visits, letters and cards. For over 25 years she took care of the sick and helpless. Though she is gone, her deeds will live on.
She had good health until April 1962, when she had a major operation. It seemed she would be well again, but later in the year she began to notice that all was not well. On May 3 she was taken to the hospital but there was no help for her, so she went to stay with her sister Marie, where kind and loving care was given her. Knowing that her days were numbered, she resigned to the will of God, and set her house in order.
Wednesday morning, May 15, she became very sick and was taken to the hospital, where within 30 minutes she quietly passed away to meet her Lord and Saviour.
She leaves to mourn her sudden passing one brother, Jacob J. Unruh of Halstead; six sisters, Marie Unruh an Mrs. Paul Koehn (Hulda), both of Halstead, Mrs. Will Unruh (Lena) of Nevada, Mo., Mrs. Jake Esau (Lydia) of Livingston, Calif., Mrs. Esther Spence of Kankakee, Ill., and Mrs. Peter Becker (Martha) of Newton; 33 nieces and nephews, 56 great nieces and nephews; and many relatives and friends.
Her parents, one brother and one nephew preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held at the Grace Mennonite Church on May 18, 1963 at 10:00 a. m. with Rev. Carl Dirks and Rev. Arnold Wiggers officiating. Burial was made in the Halstead Cemetery.
