• Relatives here received word of the death of Mrs. Lena Unruh, 65, at St. Rose Hospital, Great Bend. She was a long-time resident of the Pawnee Rock community and a member of the Bergthal Mennonite Church, where funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon by Rev. Victor Sawatzky. Surviving are the widower, Walter H. Unruh of Route 1, Great Bend; one son, Olin, of Pawnee Rock; one daughter, Mrs. Chester Gordon of Yukon, Okla.; three brothers and two sisters. A brother, Ben Unruh, lives in Newton.

MRS. LENA UNRUH

Mrs. Lena Unruh, daughter of Henry and Anna Unruh, was born July 11, 1896 at Tampa, Kansas.

She was baptized upon the confession of her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ on Oct. 7, 1917 by Rev. William Ewert, and received into the fellowship of the Friedenstal Mennonite Church.

She was united in marriage to Walter H. Unruh on June 8, 1921. After their marriage they established their home near Dundee, Kansas. At this time she united with the Bergthal Mennonite Church north of Pawnee Rock, Kansas. From 1929-1936 they made their home near Cimarron, Kansas, from where they moved back to the Dundee community.

They were privileged to live together and share the joys and sorrows of holy wedlock for 40 years, six months, and 14 days. To this union were born a son and a daughter.

Mother dearly loved her family and cherished her grandchildren, to whom she devoted much of her last days. She was concerned that they be brought up in the Christian faith and to love the Lord. She had a great concern for missions. She loved to be in the midst of fellow believers.

Mother quietly went to her blessed reward, after much suffering, on Friday, Dec. 22, 1961 at 8:55 p.m., having suffered a severe heart attack a little after 5:00 p.m. She reached the age of 65 years, five months, 11 days.

She leaves to mourn: her husband of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Olin and Wynona of Pawnee Rock, Kansas; one daughter and son-in-law, Maria and Chester Gorden [sic Gordon] of Yukon, Okla.; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Susie Unruh of Cimarron, Kansas and Lizzie, Mrs. Eli J. Schmidt of Montezuma, Kansas; three brothers, David of Durham, Kansas, Andrew of Los Angeles, Calif., and Ben of Newton, Kansas; and many relatives and friends.

Her parents and six brothers preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held Dec.26, 1961, at the Bergthal Mennonite Church north of Pawnee Rock, Kansas. At the prayer service in the home Rev. Victor Sawatzky read the 51st Psalm. Allan George Smith sang ”Asleep in Jesus.” At the church service Rev. Sawatzky read the 23rd Psalm, both in the German and English language. The funeral sermon was based on Hebrew 2:9. Allan George Smith sang “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and Mrs. Gene Schmidt and Durward Smith sang “Wonderful Peace.” Burial was made in the church cemetery.
