• Herman B. Unruh, 81, retired dean of Pratt Community College, died Jan. 19 at the Villa Manor Rest Home in Pratt. He was a native of Moundridge, and married Esther Epp at Newton in 1922. She is a sister of Mrs. J. E. Entz of Newton. Mr. Unruh also leaves a son, Carl, of Pasadena, Calif. and five grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday forenoon at the United Presbyterian Church of Pratt, of which he was a member. The body was then brought here, and a prayer service was held in the afternoon at Sister Frieda Memorial Chapel, followed by burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

HERMAN B. UNRUH

Herman B. Unruh, son of Benjamin H. and Lena Wedel Unruh, was born on a farm north of Moundridge, Kan. on Sept. 3, 1892. He died Jan. 19, 1974 at the age of 81.

He received his education in the rural schools of McPherson County, graduating from Moundridge High School in 1912. He taught a rural school before 1915 to 1917 and the spring term of 1919. He attended Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio, receiving his A.B. degree there in 1920.

He taught school in Roxbury, Kan. High School, was superintendent of the Durham, Kan. schools, taught in Great Bend, Kan. High School and was principal of the Anthony, Kan. High School before moving to Pratt, Kan. in 1931. there he served as principal of the high school and in 1938 became the first dean of Pratt Community Junior College, serving in that capacity until 1954. He received his master's degree from Kansas University in 1928, and worked toward a Ph.D. degree at the University of Southern California. After retiring from the teaching profession he entered the investment field and was active in that business until death.

He was a member of the Kansas State Teachers Assn., National Education Assn., Kansas and National Secondary School Principal's Assn., Council of Administration, Junior College Assn., and Kansas Commission on Aviation Education, holding various offices in these organizations. A Phi Delta Kappa, he authored a high school activities accounting system used in many Kansas high schools and surrounding organizations.

A member of the United Presbyterian Church, he was active in all departments, also serving on boards and committees of the Presbytery and Synod. For a number of years he was on the board of trustees of the College of Emporia.

A member of the Lions Club, he served as president, zone chairman, deputy district governor and district governor for District 17-S. At his death he was an International Counselor of Lions International. He was a charter member of the Pratt Knife and Fork club, and had served as secretary-treasurer since its organization in 1946.

He married Esther Epp in Newton, Kan. on Aug. 22, 1920. He is survived by his widow; one son, Carl, of Pasadena, Calif.; and five grandchildren. A daughter, Neva Jean Harris, preceded him in death in 1966. Also preceding him in death were three brothers, David B., Peter B. and John B. Unruh, and two sisters, Mrs. Tob. (Mary) Decker and Mrs. Frank (Lena) Rudiger.

Services were held in the Pratt United Presbyterian Church with interment in the Greenwood Cemetery, Newton, on Jan. 23, 1974. — The Family.
