— Funeral services for Henry J. Unruh, aged resident of the Goessel community, were held at the Alexanderwohl church Monday forenoon, Oct. 27. He passed away at his home in Goessel on Oct. 23. Three sons and two daughters survive.

HEINRICH J. UNRUH

Heinrich J. Unruh, son of Jacob and Anna Schmidt Unruh, was born in Alexanderwohl, South Russia, April 24, 1866. At the age of eight years in 1874 he emigrated with his parents, four brothers and one sister to America, where they established a home in Marion county, Kansas.

Being the son of a pioneering family, his elementary education consisted of only a few months the first few years. Due to an unfortunate experience shortly before leaving Russia most of their money was lost. This made the first years in America especially difficult. Those early experiences were very beneficial however and made a deep impression upon him as it taught him the correct evaluation of material and spiritual things.

He was baptized upon confession of faith in his Redeemer Jesus Christ on June 14, 1886, by Rev. Peter Buller, and became a member of the Alexanderwohl church, whose faithful member he remained until his death.

On November 17, 1891, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Goertz, by Peter Balzer. This union was blessed with six children, four sons and two daughters, of whom one son preceded him in death in early infancy. He was grandfather to six children and great-grandfather to one.

Sharing joys and sorrows for many years, last November they were permitted by the grace of God to observe their 60th anniversary with family and friends in their home at Goessel, where they had made their home since their retirement from the farm in 1947.

He enjoyed fairly good health until the summer of 1948. After being under medical care for some time he was advised to undergo an operation, which was performed in October that year at the Axtell Christian hospital, Newton, Kansas. The operation was successful in so far that it gave him relief, so that he could enjoy normal life again until about a year ago when he began to fail rapidly. He was bedfast for about two months and was called home to his Saviour at 2:40 a.m. October 24, reaching the age of 86 years and six months.

He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, Mrs. H. J. Unruh of Goessel; children, Ferd G. Unruh and wife of Lehigh, Sarah Mrs. Henry J. Woelk and husband of Wichita, Anna M. Unruh of the home at Goessel, Henry G. Unruh and family of rural Canton, and Ernest G. Unruh and family of rural Canton; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild, one sister-in-law, one half-brother and one half-sister and their families, and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held or October 27, 1952, in charge of Rev P. A. Wedel, assisted by Rev. P. P. Buller and Rev. Frank G. Pankratz.
