— Ed Unruh, postmaster and owner of the Unruh Mercantile Store at Goessel, died unexpectedly of heart attack last Sunday afternoon while he was out at the Marion county lake. Mr. Unruh was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Unruh. Besides his grief-stricken wife, daughter Marjorie and son Virgil, also the following brothers and sisters survive: Mrs. Menno E. Schmidt, Newton; Albert Unruh and Mrs. Arthur Schroeder, Goessel; Mrs. J. C. Reimer, Hillsboro, and Mrs. Paul Regier, Moundridge. Announcement of the time of the funeral awaited word from the son, who is in the navy.

— One of the largest funerals ever held at the Alexanderwohl church at Goessel was that for Ed Unruh, well known community merchant and contractor, on Sunday afternoon. A crowd estimate between 1,000 and 1,500, attended the services there, while an additional number gathered at the cemetery in Moundridge, where burial took place. Rev. P. A. Wedel, pastor at Alexanderwohl, was in charge of the services at the church. Mr. Unruh died Sunday, march 18, while spending the afternoon at the Marion county lake. His body was found floating in the water but since the doctor's examination showed very little water in his lungs it appears evident that he fell off the dam after having suffered a heart attack. He is survived by his wife and two children, besides a large circle of relatives and friends.

EDWARD UNRUH

Edward Unruh, oldest son of John J. and Helena Voth Unruh, was born February 20, 1888, at Peabody, Kansas. With his parent she also endured the hardships of pioneer life.

He received his educational training in the local public schools, in the H. D. Penner Preparatory School at Hillsboro, and at Bethel College, Newton, Kansas.

He taught for three years in the Paris school, Harvey county, Kansas, and five years in the consolidated school at Lorraine, Kansas. He was baptized upon confession of faith in his Redeemer on June 7, 1908, by Rev. H. R. Voth. He was married to Elizabeth Regier of Moundridge, Kansas, June 16, 1915, with whom he shared life's joys and sorrows for almost thirty years. The home was blessed with two children, Virgil Edward of San Francisco, California, (serving in the armed forces) and Marjorie Unruh of the home.

Mr. Unruh's occupational life was varied. He was a thresherman in his earlier years, in construction work and moving of buildings for the past 16 years; was also engaged in the mercantile business in Goessel for many years, and served as postmaster of the Goessel post office for the last three years. In his many occupations the departed served his fellowmen in the different localities very diligently, especially in the town and community of Goessel, where he lived.

Mr. Unruh always enjoyed normal health, but in the later years of his life his health began to fail. He passed away suddenly on Sunday, March 18, 1945, at 4:30 P. M.

He leaves to mourn his sudden departure his deeply bereaved wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Unruh; one son, Virgil, and his wife Linda; one daughter, Marjorie, and one grandson, Lanny Dee.

O mighty grace, our life to live
To make our earth divine;
Q. [sic] mighty grace! Thy heaven to give,
And lift our life to Thine.

O strange the gifts and marvellous,
By thee received and given!
Thou tookest woe and death from us
And we receive Thy Heaven.

Then in the living God we trust
Who doeth all things well
The body shall return to dust
The soul in Heaven shall dwell.

The funeral was held in the Alexanderwohl church Sunday, March 18. It was one of the largest funerals ever held in this church, it being estimated that over 1500 people attended. Mr. Unruh had many friends and was well known throughout this section. He was highly esteemed as a civic leader and business man in the Goessel community.

The funeral was in charge of Rev. P. A. Wedel, who preached the funeral sermon, and Rev. C. C. Wedel who led the devotionals.
