BERNHARD UNRUH

Bernhard Unruh, oldest son of David S. and Wilhelmina Schmidt Unruh was born May 29, 1897 in Marin county, Kansas. He passed away on July 16, 1982 at the age of 85.

He grew up on the family farm in Heinbaugh School District and attended Goessel Preparatory School. During World War I he served as a medic at Camp Funston, Kansas.

He was a life-long member of the Tabor Mennonite Church, having been baptized on May 27, 1917 by P. H. Richert and received into the church by the right hand of fellowship.

On Aug. 14, 1924 he married Margaret Klassen in the Tabor Mennonite Church. To this union three children were born: Renetta (Mrs. Vernon E.) Plett of Collinsville, Okla., Charles D. of rural Peabody and Betty (Mrs. Arnold W.) Ratzlaff of rural Buhler, all of whom survive with their spouses.

Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two brothers and two sisters, David D. of Hillsboro, Henry of rural Newton, Marie Hildebrand of Newton and Minnie Martens of Lehigh, and their spouses.

Ben, as he was commonly known, lived out his life as a farmer west of Peabody and was considered a good steward of the soil. He attended the Tabor church faithfully and served as a trustee for a time.

In 1974 he and Margaret celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house at church. Other highlights for him were the family Christmas gatherings and following, with interest, the accomplishments of his grandchildren.

Services were held July 19 with pastors Jim Schrag and H. B. Schmidt in charge. Burial was in the church cemetery.
