H. B. UNRAU

H. B. Unrau, our father and husband, was born on March 19, 1881 near Goessel, Kan., the youngest son of Rev. Peter and Helena (Balzer) Unrau. He received his elementary education in the Hochfeld School.

In 1901 he was baptized by Elder Peter Balzer and received as a member of the Alexanderwohl congregation. He joined the Goessel Mennonite Church in 1920 as a charter member and remained a faithful member until his death.

He was married to Elisabeth Schroeder on May 12, 1905. It was their privilege to share joys and sorrows and God's blessings for over 62 years. To this union were born six children, three sons and three daughters, all of whom are living.

In 1951 our parents retired from the farm and made their home in Goessel. Father had eye surgery in 1962 which was successful, enabling him to spend much time in reading. Otherwise he enjoyed fairly good health until he had a light stroke in July 1965. He recovered enough to participate in social functions. He attended church services whenever possible. He entered Salem Hospital on Nov. 18 after another heart spell and passed away the evening of Dec. 21, reaching the age of 86 years, nine months and two days.

Remaining to cherish his memory are mother and children, Walter and Verna Unrau of Newton, Philip and Edna Schmidt of rural Newton, Clarence and Frieda Unrau of Wichita, Jake and Sylvia Flaming of Hutchinson, Mildor and Bernice Duerksen of Lehigh, Gladwin and Elaine Unrau of the West Indies; 16 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and many relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death, besides his parents, were three grandchildren, his three brothers and four sisters.
