HILDA ELIZABETH UNGER
Hilda Elizabeth Unger (nee Wiese) was born July 17. 1901 in Aplech. Russia. She emigrated to Germany where in 1919 she married Jacob P. Unger. In 1923 the family immigrated to Canada, first to Saskatchewan, and in 1940 to St. Catharines. Mrs. Unger was a member of the Lutheran Church before coming to Canada and there made her initial commitment to Christ. Early in 1943 she experienced Jesus Christ anew and on July 11, 1943, was baptized by Rev. Dietrich Klassen of the Virgil Mennonite Brethren Church. She joined the St. Catharines Church on October 17, 1943, as one of its charter members.
Her health began to fail after the death of her husband Jacob in 1958 and during the next ten years she was frequently, in and out of hospital. After another period in the hospital in the winter of 1969-70 she was released on Wednesday, January 21. She spent the greater part of Saturday, January 24, at the annual meeting of the Scott St. Mennonite Brethren Church. She enjoyed meeting friends. Early the following morning, January 25, she suffered a heart attack and, within minutes, passed away.
She is survived by four sons. William and Bert, both of Toronto, Eric of Weiland, and Walter in Clearbrook, B.C.; three daughters, Mrs. Hertha Mitchell of Ottawa, Mrs. Edna Willms of Detroit and Mrs. Hilda Thiessen of Winnipeg; one brother and 25 grandchildren.
The family rests in the assurance that through the mercy of God who accepts us because of Christ, their mother has entered the Realm of Eternal Day. They wish to thank the members and especially the pastor of the Scott St. Church for the many deeds of kindness and loving concern shown to their mother. Rev. Henry Penner officiated at the funeral conducted Thursday, January 27, at the Scott St. ,Church.
