Well Known Central Illinois Pastor Dies

Morton, Ill. — Rev. Samuel Ummel, 76, who served as pastor of Central District Conference churches in Illinois during his 40 years in the Christian ministry, died at the Meadows Mennonite Home on April 2. He had resided at the Home since January 1969.

The funeral was conducted April 5 at the Calvary Mennonite Church in Washington, with Rev. Ward Shelly, the pastor, Rev. Walter Regier of Peoria and Rev. Ben Esch of Washington officiating.

A native of the Carlock, Ill. community, Rev. Ummel was ordained in 1930. He served the following pastorates: the Mennonite Church at Anchor, Ill., 1929-34; Bethel Mennonite Church at Pekin, 1934-45; Mennonite Gospel Church of Peoria, 1946-62; and since 1962 as interim pastor of the North Danvers Mennonite Church (three years), Calvary Church of Washington, Grace Bible Church of Washington, and the Boynton Mennonite Church, Hopedale.
