Well Known Central Illinois Pastor Dies

Morton, Ill. — Rev. Samuel Ummel, 76, who served as pastor of Central District Conference churches in Illinois during his 40 years in the Christian ministry, died at the Meadows Mennonite Home on April 2. He had resided at the Home since January 1969.

The funeral was conducted April 5 at the Calvary Mennonite Church in Washington, with Rev. Ward Shelly, the pastor, Rev. Walter Regier of Peoria and Rev. Ben Esch of Washington officiating.

A native of the Carlock, Ill. community, Rev. Ummel was ordained in 1930. He served the following pastorates: the Mennonite Church at Anchor, Ill., 1929-34; Bethel Mennonite Church at Pekin, 1934-45; Mennonite Gospel Church of Peoria, 1946-62; and since 1962 as interim pastor of the North Danvers Mennonite Church (three years), Calvary Church of Washington, Grace Bible Church of Washington, and the Boynton Mennonite Church, Hopedale.

REV. SAMUEL UMMEL

Rev. Samuel Ummel, 76, of Morton, Ill. died April 2 at Meadows Mennonite Home, Meadows, Ill., where he had been a resident since Jan. 25 of this year.

Rev. Ummel was born at Carlock, Ill. on Nov. 23, 1892, the son of Christian and Marie Aeschliman Ummel. He was married to Elsie Nafziger at Anchor, Ill. on Dec. 30, 1914.

Surviving are his wife; one son, Mervin of Groveland, Ill.; three daughters, Mrs. Walter (Ferne) Kennel of Morton, Mrs. Melvin (Dorothy) Norquist, Butterfield, Minn., and Mrs. Dennis (Lola) Diemer of Pekin, Ill.; four sisters, Mrs. Martha Kaufman of Normal, Mrs. Joash (Esther) Stutzman and Mrs. Earl (Clara) Stutzman, both of rural Carlock and Mrs. Bertha Linneman of Bloomington; two brothers, Ernest of Bloomington and Paul of Chenoa; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were one daughter, Catherine Louise, one grandchild, three sisters and five brothers.

Rev. Ummel was a lifelong resident of the Morton and Peoria area. He was ordained in 1930 and was a member of the Mennonite Gospel Church in Peoria. From 1929 to 1934 he was pastor at the Mennonite Church at Anchor; from 1934 to 1945 he served at Bethel Mennonite Church, Pekin; from 1946 to 1962 as pastor at Mennonite Gospel Church in Peoria.

From 1962 to 1968 he served as interim pastor at North Danvers Mennonite Church, Danvers, Calvary Mennonite Church, Grace Bible Church, Washington, and the last three years at the Boynton Mennonite Church in Hopedale.

Services were held April 5 at the Calvary Mennonite Church, Washington, with burial in Parkhill Cemetery, Bloomington. Officiating ministers were Rev. Ward Shelley of Calvary Mennonite, Rev. Walter Regier, Mennonite Gospel Church, Peoria, and Rev. Ben Esch of Washington.
