Widow of Professor Dies in Indiana

Goshen, Ind. — Mrs. Alice L. Umble, 87, died July 17, at Alfran Nursing Home, Warsaw, Ind. from complications of old age. She had suffered a stroke on May 19 at Fairlawn Haven, Archbold, Ohio.

Funeral services were held at the Goshen Seminary Chapel on July 21, with Rev. John H. Mosemann officiating.

Widow of the later John D. Umble, professor of speech and English at Goshen College, Mrs. Umble was born Jan. 20, 1882, to Amos and Sabina (Ebersole) Landis of Sterling, Ill. She joined the Mennonite Church when she was a student at Elkhart Institute, from which she graduated in 1901. She took additional work at Northwestern University.

Mrs. Umble was among the first instructors at Goshen College, having taught commerce and music at the school in 1903-4 just after it moved from Elkhart, where it was known as the Elkhart Institute. She was married to John Umble on Christmas Day, 1906, at Goshen.

Over the years the Umbles lived at Streetsboro and West Liberty, Ohio, and at Goshen. In every community she was active in the local Mennonite church and its music program.

To her husband Mrs. Umble was of much assistance in collecting materials for the Goshen College Alumni Directory, the Newsletter, the history of Goshen College, and his other publications.

Surviving are two sons, B. Frank, Enid, Okla., and Roy, Goshen; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; three brothers — Austin, Elwood, and Menno, all of Goshen; and four sisters, — Mrs. J. J. (Mary) Smoker, Mrs. D. S. (Ruth) Gerig, and Mrs. Ohmer (Esther) Norris, all of Goshen, and Mrs. Raymond J. (Florence) Schertz, Metamora, Ill.
