Freda Uhren, daughter of John and Lizzie Schnebele Staufer, was born on April 7, 1911, at Deer Creek, Okla., and passed away at the Bethel Deaconess Hospital, Newton, Kan., on June 21, 1962, at 5 a.m. after a few months illness.

At the age of 13 she was baptized and joined the Deer Creek Mennonite Church and later attended the Methodist Church.

She attended both grade and high school at Deer Creek, Okla., and was valedictorian of her senior class. She continued her education at Bethel College, North Newton, Kan.,where she received her A.B. degree in 1933. Because of her scholastic achievements, she was granted the honor of the “Order of the Golden A” upon her graduation from college. She did post-graduate work at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia.

Previous to her marriage, she taught school for several years, one year near Pawnee Rock, Kan., two years in Haviland, Kan., and four years in Sedgwick, Kan.

In 1940, she was married to Edward Uhren, who was in the grocery business in Argonia, Kan. at that time. Later they were in business in Sedgwick and Norwich.

In 1958, they moved back to Sedgwick, where she again took up teaching in the Sedgwick school system, and continued teaching until April, 1962, when she entered Bethel Hospital for surgery. She was able to return home for several weeks. On May 22, she enjoyed attending the graduation exercises of the twin daughters from Sedgwick High School. She re-entered the Bethel hospital on June 18.

She leaves to mourn her early departure her husband, Edward, a son, Darel Lee, Wichita Falls, Texas; twin daughters, Joni Lou and Janis Sue of the home; her aged mother, Mrs. John Staufer; a brother, Milton Staufer; two sisters, Anna Staufer and Mrs. Elmer Lichti, all of Deer Creek; a brother-in-law, Rev. P. K. Regier, North Newton, Kan., and many other relatives and friends. Her father and sister Marie, Mrs. P. K. Regier, preceded her in death.

The funeral service was held in the Methodist Church of Sedgwick, June 23, with Rev. Garner J. Berg officiating. She was laid to rest beside their infant daughter in Argonia, Kan., where the graveside service was held.
