MENNO L. TROYER

Menno L. Troyer, son of Eli and Susannah Oswald Troyer, was born May 1, 1891, near Arthur, Ill.; died March 27, 1966 at his home near Elida, Ohio.

He was the youngest of a family of nine children. He was a member of a pioneer family that knew rugged living and hardship. Menno grew up in a home that was both strict and loving; hard work was balanced by strong Christian teaching and firm family relationships.

He married Elizabeth Good of Elida, Ohio on Dec. 23, 1914. Four children were born and nurtured in the Christian home: Leonard, Robert and Fred, all of Elida, and Lucille (Mrs. Warren Christophel) of Goshen, Ind. His wife Elizabeth died May 18, 1953. On Nov. 12, 1954 he married Ethel Zook of New Wilmington, Pa.

As a child he was very devoted to his mother and this devotion continued throughout his life to the members of his own family, including his grandchildren. He maintained a home "given to hospitality" where spiritual values were taught and lived.

In addition to his wife, his four children and their companions, he is survived by 17 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and three sisters. The sisters are Mrs. Elizabeth Yoder of West Liberty, Ohio, Mrs. J. I. (Amanda) Byler of Elkhart, Ind., and Mrs. S. W. (Sana) Witmer, of Goshen, Ind. Three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

Menno became a member of the Mennonite Church when he was 14 years of age. On Dec. 4, 1927 he was ordained to the office of deacon. Aug. 18, 1940 he was ordained to the Christian ministry, and on Oct. 30, 1949 to the office of bishop. Through these offices he he served the Central Church at Elida, Ohio for nearly 40 years.

Many years were devoted to the work of the Ohio Mission Board, serving as president and on the various committees. During the years 1953 to 1964 he served as field worker and bishop for the churches sponsored by this board. These activities gave him much joy and satisfaction.

Through his long, trying illness. Menno demonstrated his faith in God's promise and left all of us a clear example of what God will do for those who "wait upon the Lord."

Memorial services were held in the Central Church on March 30, with Rev. Edward Frey of Archbold, Ohio bringing the message. Rev. Walter Smeltzer was in charge of the service. Burial was in Salem cemetery at Elida.
