HERBERT N. TROYER

Herbert N. Troyer, son of the late Noah J. and Sarah Mast Troyer, was born at Baltic, Ohio, August 9, 1899 [sic 1889]; died Nov. 17, 1954, at the Leigh Memorial hospital at Norfolk, Va., aged 65 years, three months and eight days. He had been in failing health for one year but bedfast only the last week of his life.

On Nov. 20, 1910 he married Sadie Mast of Millersburg, Ohio. To this union were born four daughters and four sons; one infant son preceded him in death in 1915.

Bro. Troyer spent 24 years of his life as a school teacher, teaching in both public and parochial schools of Ohio and Virginia. in 1918 due to ill health in the family, the Troyers moved to Harrisonburg, Va. Here he served as one of the pioneer instructors at Eastern Mennonite School and also was its business manager for five years.

In 1923 the Troyer family moved back to Ohio again and in 1924 Bro. Troyer was ordained to the ministry at East Orwell, Ohio. From East Orwell he was called to the ministry at Aurora, Ohio and then to Hartville, Ohio.

At Harville he organized the Harville Mennonite congregation and was its first pastor. He also organized the Lake Center Christian Day School at Hartville and was its first principal.

At the time of his death he was pastor of the Providence congregation at Oyster Point, Va. The last church duty he performed was that of licensing Wilbur Smoker from Pennsylvania to the ministry at Oyster point on Oct. 10, 1954. Bro. Troyer also took communion the same day.

He served on church committees throughout his lifetime. He also made an intensive study of life insurance and wrote a book on that subject.

He is survived by his wife, seven children, 20 grandchildren, one brother and three sisters. He was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Clyde Rowles of Canton, Ohio and by his parents.

Surviving children are Miss Marie Troyer, Jos, Nigeria, Africa; Galen Troyer of Hiram, Ohio; Mrs. C. S. Kurtz of Fentress, Va.; Mrs. Warren Burkholder of Harrisonburg, Va.; Mrs. Weldom [sic Weldon] Martin of Mathis, Texas; John Troyer of Warwick, Va.; and James Troyer of Canton, Ohio.

Also surviving him are his brother, Elmer N. Troyer of Millersburg, Ohio; three sisters, Mrs. H. W. Shank of Paris, Ohio, Mrs. William H. Brown of Stone Creek, Ohio, and Mrs. Moses Slabaugh of Harrisonburg, Va.

Final rites were held at the Mt. Pleasant church near Fentress, Va. on Sunday, Nov. 21. Officiating clergy were Bishop Ira Kurtz of Morgantown, Pa.; Bishop Simon Coblentz, formerly of Hartville, Ohio where the deceased had lived before moving to Virginia; and Pastor Wilbur Smoker of Oyster Point, Va.

The widow, Mrs. H. N. Troyer, underwent major surgery the same day as her husband died. She is now at home at Fentress, Va. with her daughter, Mrs. C. S. Kurtz.
