The Troyer home a mile east of Nottawa caught fire in the early morning hours of June 8. Mrs. Stella Mae Troyer, 33, who is the only survivor, awakened to the odor of smoke in the couple's first floor bedroom. Finding her husband overcome, she ran outside and tried in vain to move a heavy ladder to the window of second-floor bedrooms where the children were sleeping.

Father, Four Children Perish in Home Fire

Centreville, Mich. — A fire tragedy in the nearby southern Michigan community of Nottawa claimed the lives of a father and his four children.

Funeral services for David R. Troyer, 34, and his children David Wayne, 10, Roger Lee, 9, Debra Sue, 7, and Betsy Ann, 6, were conducted June 10 at the Locust Grove Mennonite Church near Burr Oak.

The Troyer home a mile east of Nottawa caught fire in the early morning hours of June 8. Mrs. Stella Mae Troyer, 33, who is the only survivor, awakened to the odor of smoke in the couple's first floor bedroom.
