Farmer Fatally Hurt By Falling Tree

SERVICES HELD AT HARPER, KANSAS FOR SAM J. TROYER, 62

Harper, Kan. — Memorial services were conducted at the Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church near here on April 9 for Sam J. Troyer, 62, who was instantly killed by the limb of a falling tree on April 6.

Mr. Troyer was felling a tree on a newly acquired tract of land and thought he was at a safe distance but a large limb which he did not see struck him as the tree toppled over.

A native of Ness County, Kan., he moved to McPherson County at an early age with his parents, Menno Z. and Susan Troyer. He was formerly a teacher, and also farmed in McPherson County and at Jet, Okla. He had lived in the Harper community since 1930.

Surviving are his wife, the former Iva Miller, four children, his aged mother, three brothers, four sisters and nine grandchildren.

SAM J. TROYER

Sam J. Troyer, son of the late Menno Z. and Susan (Miller) Troyer, was born near Ransom, in Ness County, Kan. on August 16, 1893, and departed this life April 6, 1956, age 62 years, seven months and 33 days.

His life was claimed when a tree fell on him as he was working on a newly acquired tract of land.

In 1897 he with his parents moved to McPherson County, Kan., where he grew to manhood.

He accepted Christ as his Saviour and was received into the fellowship of the West Liberty Mennonite Church by water baptism Jan.21, 1906.

His livelihood was gained by teaching school, and farming in McPherson County and near Jet, Okla. He with his family moved to a farm near Harper in 1930 where he lived the remainder of his life.

On Dec. 21, 1917, he was united in marriage to Iva Miller. To this union were born four children: Mervin of Duquoin, Maurine, Mrs. Vernon Zimmerman, Harper, Wilbur of Harper, Wilma of Kansas City, Kan.

His father, two brothers, one grandson and one granddaughter preceded him in death.

He leaves to await a heavenly reunion the immediate family, his aged mother, three brothers, Roy of Hesston, Ora of Kansas City, and Menno of Conway, Kansas; four sisters, Lily, Mrs. Edward Steckly of Albany, Ore., Bertha of Conway, Kan., Ida, Mrs. Floyd Kauffman of Minot, North Dakota, and Dorothy, Mrs. Leo Burkett, of Kansas City; also nine grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted April 9 at the Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church near Harper. R. M. Weaver gave the devotional meditation, based on II Cor. 4:15-18. Milo Kauffman preached the sermon, based on I Sam. 3:18, and also had charge of the committal service in the Pleasant Valley cemetery.
