— The aged Jacob F. Toevs [sic Toews] died Tuesday evening at the Bethel Deaconess Hospital. Funeral services will be Friday at 2:30 p. m. in the First Mennonite Church.

— Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon at the First Mennonite Church for Jacob F. Toews, 88, a resident of Newton for 52 years and a retired carpenter. Rev. Arnold Epp and Rev. J. E. Entz officiated. Mr. Toews, a native of Heubuden, Germany, died March 26 at the Bethel Deaconess Hospital. He leaves four sons, three daughters, two sisters and two brothers, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

JACOB F. TOEWS

Our father, Jacob F. Toews, was born Feb. 18, 1869, at Heubuden, Germany to Rev. and Mrs. J. R. Toews. He attended elementary school in the village.

When he was 15, the family came to America and settled on a farm near McClain, Kansas. His father served different churches in the community and our father very often accompanied him on these trips. Father was baptized by Rev. Leonhard Suderman and received into the membership of the First Mennonite Church of Newton, Kansas, of which he remained a member until his death.

On Sept. 11, 1889, he was married to Marie Ewert, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Wm. Ewert. Rev. Ewert was elder of the Bruderthal Mennonite Church, Hillsboro, Kansas. Father and mother established their home on a farm near McClain, Kansas, where they lived for about 15 years. In about 1903 they moved to Newton, and have resided at 501 S. E. Second Street ever since. For a time father did carpenter work, and also was custodian of the church.

In September 1939, father and mother celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, which thy enjoyed very much. Mother passed away July 17, 1946.

He leaves to mourn his passing three daughters, Lydia, Mrs. Henry Enz of Newton, Mary, Mrs. Gerhard Claassen of Newton, Elma Mrs. Rudy Stohl of Kelso, Wash.; four sons, Albert of Turtleford, Sask., Walter of Kansas City, Missouri, Jacob of Moundridge, Kansas, and Edward of Halsted, Kansas; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers, Mrs. C. F. Classen, Mrs. G. A. Entz, and H. H. Toevs, all of newton, and Rudolph Toevs, Nevada, Mo.

Father passed away at Bethel Hospital, March 26, 1957. Funeral services were held March 29 at the First Mennonite Church, with Rev. Arnold Epp and Rev. J. E. Entz officiating. — The Children.
