— Mrs. Helena Toews, 66, wife of Abe F. Toews and a resident of the Inman community most of her life, died at Mercy Hospital in Moundridge on Sunday. Funeral services were scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at the Zoar M. B. church, Rev. James Wiebe officiating.

HELENA THIESSEN TOEWS

Helena Thiessen Toews, daughter of Rev. Cor. and Helna [sic Helena] Unruh Thiessen, was born on May 17, 1895 in Reno county near Buhler, Kan. She was eight years old when her parents moved to a farm in the West Eagle School District, where she acquired her education and grew to womanhood. her life came to an end at the Mercy Hospital in Moundridge on Sunday, Sept. 17, after an illness of about eleven months.

In the fall of 1909 she came under conviction of her lost condition without Christ as her Saviour. She based her assurance of salvation on Matt 9:2. Upon confession of faith she was baptized by Rev. John Easu [sic Esau] on Dec. 5, 1909, and joined the Zion K.M.B. Church. She remained true to her church and the Lord to the end.

On May 28, 1916, she was united in marriage to A. F. Toews by John Esau. Into this home Imogene and Wilferd were taken in 1937. We brought them up in the fear of the Lord and had the privilege to see them saved.

In 1936 we were elected by the church to the office of deacon. In this she assisted me willingly. She always had sympathy for the sick and needy and delighted to minister to them.

In October her last ailment developed in her spine and at times suffered intensely. She often said at these times, “This will not always last,” and often thanked the Lord for relief from pain. Isaiah 28:29 was a comfort to her.

She was hospitalized four different times. For three weeks we stayed with her sisters in Hillsboro and the remaining time she was cared for by me at home. We thank the Lord for all the prayer warriors who interceded for us to the end.

Preceding her in death were her parents, three sisters, one brother, one sister-in-law and one brother-in-law.

She is survived by her sorrowing husband; Wilferd and wife Tyda and Imogene and her husband, Leonard Thiessen; seven grandchildren, seven sisters, four brothers, seven brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law, and a host of friends. — A. F. Toews.
