• Mrs. Bertha Tiahrt, 65, widow of Fred Tiahrt, died Sunday at the Halstead Hospital. The funeral was conducted Wednesday afternoon at the First Mennonite Church of of Halstead, with Rev. Melvin Schmidt in charge. The former Bertha Baergen of Inman, Mrs. Tiahrt was employed as a nurses aide. Survivors include three sisters and three brothers.

MRS. BERTHA TIAHRT

Bertha Baergen Tiahrt of Halstead, Kan. was born Dec. 7, 1902, and died on Nov. 16, 1968 at the Halstead Hospital after about a year's illness.

Upon confession of faith she was baptized at Lake Charles, La. on June 20, 1920. After taking up residence in Halstead she became a member of the First Mennonite Church and took great interest in Sunday School and church services.

She was married to Fred Tiahrt on July 15, 1928 who preceded her in death in 1931. They lived at Lake Charles until the death of Fred. Bertha then came to Kansas where she worked as hotel clerk for a number of years, and in later years took up the work of home nursing and nurses aid.

She was a graduate of Buhler (Kan.) High School. In 1957 she spent eight months in the Los Angeles, Calif. area during which she took training in home nursing and nurses aid and at the same time was employed as home nurse. In November 1957 she returned to Halstead and soon began home nursing in homes in Halstead.

From Oct. 10, 1964 until Dec. 7, 1967 she was employed by the Halstead Hospital as nurses aid. At that time it became necessary for her to give up her work due to illness. She dearly loved her work and the people with whom she worked. She had many friends wherever she lived and worked. She was a great lover of flowers and enjoyed gardening as well as cooking and baking.

Survivors include three brothers, Gus A. and George P. Baergen, both of Hutchinson, Kan., and Arnold B. Baergen, Bakersfield, Calif.; three sisters, Mrs. Katie Reimer of Inman, Kan., Mrs. Helen Unruh of Nickerson, Kan., and Marie Baergen of the home; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Nov. 20 at the church with Rev. Melvin D. Schmidt officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Harvey Vogt, organist, and Melvin Unruh of Bethany, Okla., a nephew. Burial was at Fairlawn cemetery, Hutchinson.
