Businessman Called By Death

Steinbach, Man. — Funeral services for Jacob Thiessen, 59, who operated a fur farm near here for about 30 years, took place Oct. 13 at the Evangelical Mennonite Church. He died of a heart ailment Oct. 8.

Surviving are his wife, the former Marie Rempel of Meade, Kansas, and three children, Grace 7, Waldo 4, and Leroy 2; five brothers and two sisters. Two brothers and one sister live in Mexico.

JACOB JANZEN THIESSEN

Jacob J. Thiessen was born Jan. 23, 1896, near Giroux, Manitoba, and was raised on the farm of his parents, peter F. and Margaret Thiessen. He received his elementary training at the Blumenhof school, about three miles from his home.

Healthy and ambitious, he faced the future, and after he had helped his parents on the farm, he eventually started out on his own. First he was in the honey business, and later, together with his younger brother Abram, he started a mink farm or ranch. After some years he bought the ranch from his brother and built up a fairly successful fur business.

When Jacob was 21 years old he realized his lost condition and turned to the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of sin. He was baptized upon his confession of faith by the late Elder Peter R. Dueck and received into the Kleinegemeinde (now Evangelical Mennonite) church in which he held membership at the time of his death.

After being single for a number of years he married Marie Rempel on Sept. 2, 1947, at Steinbach, Manitoba, sharing joy and sorrow for eight years, one month and six days.

He enjoyed fairly good health until about four years ago when a heart condition developed. He had to slow up with his work to a considerable extent, relying more on hired help, and planned also to retire entirely from business.

Saturday evening, Oct. 1, sharp chest pains made themselves felt and he was taken to the Bethesda hospital at Steinbach. After a few days the pains disappeared completely and he was allowed to go home again. Friday morning more pains appeared. The next morning, Oct. 8, after having spent a bad night, he ate his breakfast as usual, when all of a sudden a heart attack developed. The doctor and the next of kin were called immediately, but all arrived too late. His soul had passed from this earthly tabernacle and taken abode with his Lord.

Bro. Thiessen reached the age of 59 years, eight months ond [sic] 16 days. He is survived by his sorrowing wife; three children, Gracie 7, Waldie 4, and Leroy 2; five brothers, John of Morris, Peter of Blumenort, Abram in Mexico, Isaac of Steinbach, David in Mexico; and two sisters, Helena, Mrs. B. R. Dueck of Mexico, presently visiting here, and Susanna, Mr. [sic] K. K. Penner, of Blumenort. His parents, two brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.

The funeral was held on Thursday, Oct. 13, in the E. M. Church at Steinbach. Rev. D. P. Reimer from Blumenort spoke in German, and Rev. B. D. Reimer, Steinbach, who officiated, brought the message in English. The body was brought to the Blumenort cemetery and buried there. The brothers, Peter and George Rempel with their wives, and sister Elizabeth, Mrs. Jac. Bartel and her husband, all from Meade, Kan., as well as two sisters, Helen, Mrs. John A. Isaac, and Anna, Mrs. Ben N. Classen, both from Dallas, Ore., all came to the funeral. — Mrs. Marie Thiessen and Children.
