GEORGE G. THIELMAN

George G. Thielman passed away Jan. 24. He was born Nov. 11, 1904 to schoolteacher Gerhard and Katharina Thielmarm in Rosenort, Molotschna, Ukraine. After the family immigrated to Saskatchewan, he learned English in evening school. In 1925 h e accepted a working scholarship to Bluffton (OH) College, where he joined the debating and glee clubs. He was part of a touring quartet which sang Russian songs in costume. He especially enjoyed his memories of these years after retirement. He received his B.A. in 1928 and an M.A. from Ohio State University in 1931. He returned to Saskatchewan and became a teacher. He made lasting friends. He accepted Christ and was baptized. He continued studies and taught from grade 1 to college level. In 1955 he earned a Ph.D. in political science from Western Reserve University. He taught at Georgia State University in Atlanta 1956-72. In 1973 they moved to Seattle, WA, where he taught at Whidbey Island and took courses in Russian. He is survived by his wife Susanne (Willms) Thiessen, 2 sons and 1 grandson. The memorial service was Feb. 5.
