Tammes, P. J. T. (d. 1968)
Mennonite Weekly Review obituary: 1968 Aug 22 p. 3
Birth date:
text of obituary:
Amsterdam, The Netherlands. — Mr. and Mrs. P. J. T. Tammes of Almelo became involved in an accident at Frankfurt am Oder (East Germany) Aug. 9, which proved to be fatal to both husband and wife. They were traveling from their home to pick up their son in Austria who was in a vacation camp there.
The Tammes couple have been leaders in the Dutch Mennonite Peace Group (Vredesgroep), Mrs. Tammes serving on the executive committee. For several years Mr. Tammes was a Mennonite minister at Emmen in the province of Drenthe. He was slated to be the leader of the fall meeting of the Peace Group Conference at Eispeet and had also worked with MCC leaders in plans for a conference on "The Christian Peace Witness and Revolution."
The passing of the Tammes couple leaves a gap in the Dutch Peace Group leadership. They leave five children behind. Their many friends in the Netherlands and abroad will remember the strong convictions this unusual husband and wife had to promote the Christian peace witness and to face the practical implications of this position in our present world of strife.
