A native of Thurman, Colo., Bishop Swartzendruber as ordained to the ministry at the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite church near here in 1918. The following year he was ordained as bishop, and at one time had bishop oversight of the Lower Deer Creek, West Union, Liberty, Parnell and Pleasant Valley congregations.

He served several terms as moderator of the Iowa-Nebraska Mennonite Conference, and represented the conference on the general Mission Board.

Funeral services were conducted at the Lower Deer Creek Church on Monday forenoon, July 15, with Rev. Dean Swaratzendruber [''sic'' Swartzendruber] and Rev. Robert K. Yoder in charge.

Survivors include his widow, the former Cora Yoder; a son, J. Paul, of Iowa City; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one sister, Magdalena Swartzendruber of Wellman.

Bishop, Minister Dies in Iowa

Kalona, Ia. — John Y. Swartzendruber, 83, who had been a minister and bishop in the Mennonite Church for more than half a century, died July 12 at Pleasant View Home here.

A native of Thurman, Colo., Bishop Swartzendruber as ordained to the ministry at the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite church near here in 1918. The following year he was ordained as bishop, and at one time had bishop oversight of the Lower Deer Creek, West Union, Liberty, Parnell and Pleasant Valley congregations.

He served several terms as moderator of the Iowa-Nebraska Mennonite Conference, and represented the conference on the general Mission Board.

Funeral services were conducted at the Lower Deer Creek Church on Monday forenoon, July 15, with Rev. Dean Swaratzendruber [sic Swartzendruber] and Rev. Robert K. Yoder in charge.
