Kalona, Iowa (MBM) — Maude Swartzendruber, who was involved in nursing and nursing education and administration for many years, died Nov. 26. She was 87.
Swartzendruber served from 1937-56 at La Junta (Colo.) Mennonite Hospital’s School of Nursing, a program of Mennonite Board of Missions and Mennonite Board of Education. She taught at the school for six years and was director of the school and nursing service for 14 years.
From 1956-63 she was director of education at Mennonite Hospital School of Nursing in Bloomington, Ill. From 1963-66 she established a department of nursing at the new Huerfano Memorial Hospital, Walsenberg, Colo., also administered by MBM.
She was college nurse at Hesston (Kan.) College from 1967-72.
She helped found Mennonite Nurses Association and served as its first president. She was the author of The Lamp in the West, a book about the La Junta School of Nursing, the first school of nursing in the Mennonite Church.

Maude Swartzendruber, 89, died at the home of her sister Ida Egli in Kalona on Nov. 26. Maude will be remembered as director of the nursing program at La Junta, Colo. After residing at Schowalter Villa in Hesston, Kan., for a number of years, she moved to Kalona only 10 days before her death. Funeral services were held at Manson. She is survived by four brothers, Stanley of Albuquerque, N.M., Emery and Jesse, both of Manson, and Joe of Springboro, Pa., and one other sister, Elsie (Mrs. Chauncey) Litwiller of Washington. A memorial for the India Nursing School has been established. — Mrs. Ora Keiser.

Maude Egli Swartzendruber was born in Tazewell County, Ill., on Oct. 8, 1913, and died Nov. 26, 1990, days after moving from Kansas to live with her sister Ida in Kalona, Iowa. She was the fifth of 13 children born to C.B. and Emma Egli. Her growing up years were spent on a large farm near Manson, Iowa.
In March 1927 she married John Swartzendruber, who died in December 1928.
The course of her life was changed, and she went to winter Bible school at Hesston, Kan. She graduated from high school and than entered nurses training at La Junta (Colo.) Mennonite School of Nursing, graduating in 1934. She attended Colorado State College of Education at Greeley. In 1937 the received a bachelor of science degree from Goshen (Ind.) College.
She returned to La Junta Mennonite School of Nursing, where the taught science then supervised the surgical nursing area of the hospital. She was appointed director of nursing in 1943 and served in this position in 13 years. During those years she served for five years on the Colorado State Board of Nursing.
After the La Junta school of nursing was closed, she was director of the Mennonite School of Nursing at Bloomington, Ill., for six years.
At the request of Mennonite Board of Missions, she set up the department of nursing at Huerfano Memorial Hospital at Walsenburg, Colo., from 1963-66. From 1967-76 she was staff nurse at Hesston (Kan.) College.
After her retirement to Schowalter Villa, Hesston, in 1972, she wrote "The Lamp in the West," a history of the La Junta Mennonite School of Nursing. She also edited the “La Junta Alumnae News" and kept in touch with friends and former students. She had a deep concern for missions.
She was a founder of the Mennonite Nurses Association. She was chosen Nurse of the Year in 1975.
She is survived by four brothers, two sisters, many other relatives and the La Junta School of Nursing alumnae.
