Indian Pastor, Community Leader Dies in Oklahoma

Canton, Okla. — (GCNS) Arthur Sutton, 69, pastor of the Zion Mennonite Church in Canton, and an Arapaho chief, died May 16 of a heart attack. Services were held May 18.

Throughout his life Sutton participated actively in tribal and community events including the organization of rodeos and powwows. Most recently he served on the business committee of the tribal council and as the security supervisor of a recreation facility.

During the past 12 years he was particularly active in the work of the Zion church. he was licensed for the ministry on Oct. 30, 1977, although he had served as pastor since 1975.

Sutton is survived by his wife, Sally; 10 daughters, two sons, 33 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
