PIONEER SETTLER OF HILLSBORO COMMUNITY CALLED BY DEATH

Hillsboro, Kan. — Peter F. Suderman, pioneer settler and long time resident of the Hillsboro community, died at Salem hospital July 6 at the age of 82. Funeral services were held July 9 at the Brudertal church.

Coming from South Russia to Peabody, Kan. as an orphan boy in 1877, he grew to manhood in the home of his great uncle, Wilhelm Nickel. He farmed for a number of years and also served in various capacities in the Brudertal congregation.

Surviving are his wife, Maria; four children, Rev. John P. Suderman of Pandora, Ohio, Karl and Ernest Suderman and Mrs. Waldo Nickel of Hillsboro; and three grandchildren.

PETER F. SUDERMAN

Peter F. Suderman, our husband and father, was born on June 13, 1873, in Alexandertal, South Russia. He was a son of Johann and Katherina Funk Suderman. His parents died when he was about three years old. As an orphan he came to America on the steamship “Vaterland,” and landed at Peabody, Kansas on July 4, 1877. It was his uncle, Peter H. Funk, who brought him to America, but he found a home with his great uncle Wilhelm and Maria Nickel, where he grew to manhood.

Upon his confession of faith in Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour he was baptized on June 25, 1892, by Elder Wm. J. Ewert. He thus became a member of the Bruderthal [sic Brudertal] church where he retained his membership until God called him home.

The marriage with Maria E. Penner took place on Nov. 8, 1900. On Nov. 8, 1925 they were privileged to celebrate the twenty-fifth wedding anniversary and on Nov. 8, 1950, they rejoiced in the blessings of the fifty years of wedded life.

He was active in various church and Sunday School activities, having been choir director, Sunday School superintendent, S. S. treasurer, teacher, and deacon of the church. He sought to faithfully fulfill every duty in a very unassuming manner. He also took part in some necessary community responsibilities.

After living on the farm for 42 years, they moved to the home in Hillsboro. He continued to attend the Brudertal church services regularly as long as health permitted. Father reached the ripe old age of 82 years and 23 days. He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, Mrs. Maria Suderman, and children, John and Mabel Suderman of Pandora, Ohio, Karl and Frieda Suderman, Ernest and Edna Suderman, Elsie and Waldo Nickel; and three grandchildren, John Mark Suderman, Mrs. Edith Dougherty, and Shirley Suderman.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning, July 9, at the Brudertal Mennonite church, with Rev. A. E. Funk officiating.
