LYDIA RIES STUCKY

Lydia Ries Stucky, daughter of Jacob and Mary Schrag Ries, was born on Feb. 18, 1893 in Turner County near Freeman, S. D. She was reared on a farm and attended the public schools of the community.

Recognizing her need of a Saviour she was baptized upon her confession of faith on June 27, 1909 by Rev. H. Bachman and united with the Salem Mennonite Church.

On March 23, 1920 she was united in marriage with John J. Stucky. They made their first home near McPherson, Kan. Here they transferred their church membership to the Eden Mennonite Church near Moundridge. To this union were born six children: Mildred, Mrs. Walt Albrecht of Marion, S. D., Herman of Freeman, Eldon of Yankton, S. D., Weldon of Parker, S. D., Lucille, Mrs. Jasper Preheim of Marion, and Eugene of Marion.

The family returned to the Freeman community in 1944, reuniting with the Salem Mennonite Church where mother remained a faithful member until death. She enjoyed her calling as a homemaker for many years, but for the last 15 years she carried the cross of sickness and suffering. With her husband she shared life's joys and sorrows for 43 years.

On June 29 she became seriously ill with pneumonia and was taken to the Freeman Hospital where she remained until the Lord called her Home on July 9, 1963, reaching the age of 70 years, four months, and 21 days. During the years of illness she spent much time reading the Bible and listening to Gospel radio programs. She received great comfort from knowing Christ as her Saviour.

Those who mourn her passing are her beloved husband, two daughters, four sons, two sons-in-law, four daughter-in-laws [sic], 17 grandchildren (two preceded mother in death), a mother-in-law, four sisters, 10 sisters-in-law, 12 brothers-in-law, and many other relatives and friends.
