LONG-TIME OPERATOR OF OLD ALTA MILL CALLED BY DEATH

Moundridge, Kan. — Funeral services for John E. Stucky, 76, long time farmer and miller of the Alta Mill community, were held Dec. 30 at the First Mennonite church of Christian here. Death came Dec. 27 at the home in Moundridge.

A life-long resident of this community, Mr. Stucky operated the old Alta Flour Mill for about 47 years, retiring in 1948. He had been ill for six years, and two years ago moved to Moundridge.

Surviving are his wife, Katie, three daughters and one son, 17 grandchildren, one brother, J. B. Stucky of Moundridge, and one sister, Mrs. Ed Schrag of St. Joseph, Mich.

JOHN E. STUCKY

John E. Stucky, son of Benj. c. and Freni Goering Stucky, was born near Moundridge, Kansas on April 22, 1880. After a full life in the occupation of farming and milling,his health began to fail about six years ago During three of these years he was confined to his bed, a helpless patient. On Dec. 27, 1956, at 6 p.m., he departed from this life,at the age of 76 years, eight months and five days.

He leaves to mourn his departure his devoted wife, Katie; one son, Ransom of Burrton, Kansas; three daughters, Feodora (Mrs. Paul Mueller) of Halstead, Evelyn (Mrs. J. R. Frey)of Newton, and Melva (Mrs. Albert Nachtigal), near Inman; three sons-in-law, Paul, Albert and J. R.; one daughter-in-law, Mary; one brother,Jacob B. of Moundridge; one sister, Mrs. Ed. Schrag of St. Joseph, Mich.; ten grandsons; seven granddaughters, and many other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were an infant son, one brother and eight sisters.

He was baptized in the First Mennonite Church of Christian, Moundridge, on May 24, 1896, by Rev. Valentine Krehbiel, at which time he joined the church, remaining a faithful member ot the end of his life.

He was united in marriage to Katie Friesen on November 3, 1907, and they shared the joys and sorrows of life during a period of 49 years, one months and 24 days. Together they lived 47 years at the Alta Mill, and two years in Mundridge. Family life with his children and grandchildren were one of his great joys.

He was a great lover of music, and was able to play several different instruments, but was especially known for his accordian [sic accordion] playing. He was leader of a neighborhood band. Later, he and his two brothers as well as their children had a family orchestra.

He always had a great interest in the church, and was very much interested in the building of the new church, serving faithfully on the Building Committee. His was a life of unselfish service to others.

Funeral services were held in the First Mennonite Church of Christian on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 30, with burial in the church cemetery, Rev. Edmund Miller and Rev. P. P. Wedel officiated.
