Kansas Pioneer Reaches 100th Birthday

MRS. JOHN J. STUCKY OF MOUNDRIDGE IS WIDOW OF PIONEER MINISTER

Moundridge, Kan. — Mrs. John J. Stucky, one of the few remaining immigrants of the year 1874 and widow of an early day Mennonite minister, observed her 100th birthday here Saturday, Jan. 23.

Until recently Mrs. Stucky was up and about in her own home in Moundridge. however, several weeks ago she became ill and was admitted to Mercy hospital here.

Mrs. Stucky, the former Anna Schrag, was born in Horodisch, Volhynia, Russia on Jan. 23, 1960. She came to McPherson county, Kansas with her parents in 1874, the first year of the Mennonite migrations from Russia to this country. The family homesteaded land near Moundridge.

Soon after her 18th birthday Anna Schrag was married to John J. Stucky, who had come to America on the same ship as the Schrag family.

The young couple resided with Mrs. Stucky's parents for four years, and then established their own home on a farm about one mile north of Moundridge. Mr. Stucky became a pioneer minister of the Hopefield Mennonite church, the first congregation to be established by the immigrant group and served the congregation for many years.

After her husband's death Mrs. Stucky continued to make her home in this community. The only member of the immediate family still living is a daughter, Mrs. Katie Miller.
