SUPREME COURT JUSTICE STONE DIED LAST WEEK
UNEXPECTED, almost sudden death came to Chief Justice Harlan F. Stone of the United States Supreme Court early last week as result of a stroke he suffered while the court was in session.
Stone, a Republican, was appointed chief justice by the late President Roosevelt.
Present among the many government officials and hundreds of humble people at the funeral in Washington cathedral on Thursday were President Truman and Charles Evans Hughes, the man Stone succeeded as chief justice in 1940.
Hymns sung at the funeral included the familiar "O God, Our Help in Ages Past," and "The Twenty-Third Psalm."
