Teacher Called by Death At Orrville, Ohio

Orrville, Ohio. — Funeral services were conducted at the Orrville Mennonite Church on Oct. 28 for Mrs. Eli (Lena) Stoltzfus, 58, retired teachier who died at a local hospital Oct. 26 after a long illness.

Final services and burial took place Monday at West Liberty, Ohio, her former home.

The former Lena Smucker, she was a graduate of Goshen College and had done graduate work at Akron and Iowa Universities. She had taught at Mingo, Mt. Eaton, Dalton, and Wooster.

Surviving family members include four daughters, one son, two grandchildren, her mother, Mrs. Barbara Smucker of Elkhart, Ind., two sisters and two brothers.

Lena Smucker Stoltzfus, daughter of J. J. and Barbara (Esch) Smucker, was born on March 19, 1904 at West Liberty, Ohio. Following a prolonged illness she passed away at the Dunlap Memorial Hospital in Orrville, Ohio on Oct. 24, 1962, at the age of 58 years, seven months and seven days.

On Nov. 26, 1934 she was united in marriage to Eli Stoltzfus. In 1938 they moved to Wayne County, Ohio where they have continued to reside except for a three year period at Hesston, Kan. She was a graduate of Goshen College, Goshen, Ind. in the class of 1933, and had also taken graduate work at Iowa and Akron Universities. For approximately ten years she served as an elementary teacher, both in Champaign County as well as at several Wayne County schools.

While a youth she accepted Christ as her Savior and was baptized as a member of the Oak Grove Mennonite Church, West Liberty. In 1944 she and her husband transferred their membership to the Orrville Mennonite Church. They became charter members of the Friendly Circle, and for many years she capably served as a Sunday School teacher.

In addition to her husband she is survived by four daughters, Rose of Springfield, Barbara (Mrs. Don) Miller of West Liberty, Carol and Rowena at home; a son, John, of Smithville; and two grandsons. She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Barbara Elizabeth Smucker of Elkhart, Ind.; two sisters, Mrs. Dale (Ruth) Grisso of Springfield; and two brothers, George Smucker of Winter Park, Florida, and Herman Smucker of Iowa City, Iowa. A brother, Melvin, preceded her in death.

Memorial services were held at the Orrville Mennonite Church on Oct. 28, 1962 with Pastor J. Lester Graybill and Eldon King officiating. Further services were held on Oct. 29 at the Hostetler Memorial Home in West Liberty, with Nelson Kanagy and Edward Stoltzfus in charge. Interment was in the Oak Grove Cemetery at West Liberty.
