Amish Youth Killed When Caught in Belt
Mechanicsville, Md — The Amish community here was saddened by the accidental death of Stoltzfus, 18, who was fatally injured when caught in a belt attached to a tractor pulley.
The youth and his younger brother, Samuel, were sawing firewood when the saw stuck and the belt came off. Joe became entangled in the moving belt as he went to turn off the tractor. He apparently was pulled around the pulley and thrown to the ground, where the belt hit him repeatedly.
He was rushed to the Leonardtown Hospital and then was taken aboard a helicopter for a flight to a Baltimore hospital. However, he died en route, and the helicopter landed at Prince George’s Hospital.
The young man was the son of Benj. and Rebecca Stoltzfus and a member of the Amish church.
