HOWARD W. STEVANUS
Howard Webster Stevanus was born Jan. 28, 1888 at Springs, Soemrset County, Pa., and died at Meadville, Pa. City Hospital on Dec. 18, 1968. He was a son of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Hershberger Stevanus, and the last surviving member of his family.
On Jan. 2, 1921 he married Lizzie Ann Cressman who survives him. Also surviving are three daughters, Grace, Mrs. Mervin Shantz of West Montrose, Ont., Mary, Mrs. George Shiedel of Hespeler, Ont., Ethel, Mrs. Clifford Snider Jr. of Elmira, Ont.; three sons, Paul of Atmore, Ala., and Myron and Richard of Bloomingdale, Ont.; and 22 grandchildren.
In his youth he accepted Christ as his Saviour and Lord and united with the Mennonite church. He attended Hesston Bible School and Academy at Hesston, Kan., graduating in 1915. In 1916 he was invited by the Mennonite Conference of Ontario to come and serve there and was subsequently ordained to the ministry at Vineland, Ont. by Bishop S. F. Coffman. He served as pastor of the following congregations: Sherkston, Ont. 1917-1919; Bloomingdale, Ont., 1920-1942; and Oak Drive, Freemansville, Ala., 1957-1965.
In 1966 he and Mrs. Stevanus came to Conneaut Lake, Pa. This was intended to be a retirement move, but here again he was happy to make his contribution to the Sunnyside congregation, First Mennonite of Meadville, and Valley View of Spartanburg, Pa. We at Sunnyside are grateful to have had Bro. and Sister Stevanus in our fellowship, and his absence will be keenly felt. His life was dedicated to his Lord and Master and he made use of every opportunity to testify to this.
Funeral services were held on Dec. 20, 1968 at the Sunnyside Church with Harvey Schrock officiating, and on Dec. 22 at the Bloomingdale Mennonite Church, Bloomingdale, Ont., with Laurence Martin, Raymond Charles, John W. Snyder and J. B. Martin participating in the services. Interment was in the Bloomingdale Mennonite cemetery.
