Missionary on Tibetan Frontier Dies Suddenly
MRS. ELIZ. STEINER HAD SERVED IN INDIA FOR THIRTY-SIX YEARS
The following report of the passing of Mrs. Elizabeth Geiger Steiner on the mission field in the Upper Province. India, was received from her husband, Rev. E. B. Steiner.
Dharchula, Via Almora, U. P., India — I regret to inform you of the passing of my dear wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Geiger Steiner, at the age of 68 years, on Sept 2, 1949, at Dharchula, U. P., India, upon an attack of a thrombosis of the heart.
Upon our marriage August 21, 1913, we sailed for India where we have been missionaries for 36 years: first in the Central Provinces under the General Conference Mennonite Mission and then for the last 22 years in Bhot on the Tibetan and Nepalese frontier. In all these years her faithfulness to Him was manifested and especially in the little things. What she considered her duty, she carried out.
She lived a life of devotion to her Lord and spent her life for Him. On the day of her passing she was busily engaged in the Master’s service until 12:00 o’clock noon and in two and one-half hours she passed into His presence, being promoted to higher service; as she served Christ in this world, so she now serves Him is the land of glory.
She loved her Savior for Whom she laid down her life. She took every opportunity to give the message to the people along with her medical attention for them. The winning of her way into the hearts of the people was manifest on the day of her departure. When the news of her unexpected and sudden going became known, the residents of Dharchula wended their way up the mountain one-half mile to the bungalow to express their sympathy and pay their last respects.
She lived for Him and now she has her reward. The short step from this life into the next, of service from here to beyond, will ever be a memory that cannot be erased.
She was much devoted to her whole family. She leaves behind her husband, Rev. E. B. Steiner; a son, Dr. B. E. Steiner, M. D., a daughter, Anita, wife of Rev. C. E. Warren, and three granddaughters — Natalie Annette Steiner, Beth Ann and Ruth Marie Warren. All are in India. Mrs. Steiner was a member of the Grace Mennonite church, Pandora, Ohio.
Mrs. Steiner was laid to rest in the Tarkot Mission Cemetery on the Himalayan mountainside overlooking her field of service. She yielded her life to Him and when she felt anything was God’s will, she did it whole-heartedly. Blessed Memory!
