Former President of Eastern College Dies

SERVICES HELD AT HARRISONBURG, VA. FOR JOHN L. STAUFFER

Harrisonburg, Va. — Funeral services were held here Aug. 18 for John L. Stauffer, former president of Eatern Mennonite college and widely-nown [sic] bishop of the Virginia Conference. Death came unexpectedly on Aug.15 as result of a heart attack.

A native of Montgomery county, Pa., Bishop Stauffer had served on the staff of Eastern Mennonite college since 1918, holding the office of president from 1935 to 1950. Since retiring from the presidency he had continued as instructor of Bible and traveled extensively in Bible conference and evangelistic work.

He was ordained to the ministry in 1911 and as a bishop of the Northern District of the Virginia conference in 1934. His service to the church at large included membership on a number of committees in both the Virginia conference and the mennonite General Conference.
