Hamburg, West Germany.— Ethelbert Stauffer, professor emeritus of New Testament at the University of Erlangen, died recently at the age of 77, reports Mennonitische Blaetter, West German Mennonite periodical published here.
His most noted work, Theologie des Neuen Testaments (New Testament Theology), was published in 1941. He authored the book, Christus und die Caesaren (Christ and the Caesars), in 1948.
A son of Mennonite minister and missionary Gustav Stauffer, he received his Doctor of Theology degree in 1930 from Halle University and held honorary doctor's degrees from Erlangen University's Department of Theology and the Theological Academy at Budapest, Hungary.
Stauffer taught at Erlangen from 1948 to 1967. Earlier he was on the faculties of Halle and Bonn universities and served as assistant pastor of the Hamburg Mennonite Church.
