Member of Berne Church Called Away in Death

Berne, Ind. — Two well-known members of the large First Mennonite congregation here were called away in death recently.

Miss Sybilla G. Sprunger, 69, a retired high school teacher, died Feb. 4. She had suffered a stroke of paralysis on Christmas eve, 1965. Miss Sprunger taught in several Indiana high schools, and also operated the Sprunger Music Store at her home and gave private piano lessons.

Mrs. Sarah M. Burkhalter, wife of Menno Burkhalter, died Jan. 30 at the age of 89. In 1903 she and her husband founded the Fair Store here, in which he is still active. She was the mother of Dr. Freeman Burkhalter, music director in the Berne schools, and Rev. Edward Burkhalter, missionary to India. Three daughters also are among the survivors.

Both women were active members of the First Church, where the funeral services were conducted on Feb. 2 and 5, respectively.
