● Mrs. Elva Sommerfeld, 93, who was among the pioneer Mennonite settlers coming to the Spring Valley community near Canton in the 1870s, died Dec. 31 at the Mennonite Memorial Home, Moundridge. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the Spring Valley Mennonite Church, with Rev. Earl Buckwalter in charge. Mrs. Sommerfeld was born in Ashland County, Ohio and came to the Canton area with her parents, the Henry Smiths, as a small child. In 1895 she married Henry H. Sommerfeld, who died in 1944. The family lived near Canton until 1926, then moved to Harvey County, and to Hesston in 1941. Surviving are two daughters, Hattie Sommerfeld of Hesston, and Mrs. Geo. Chapple of Newton; three sons, John of Roxbury, George of Halstead, and Edwin of Cassoday; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Menno Sommerefld of Hesston; 24 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.
