Wife of Missionary Killed In Collision Near Scottsdale, Pa.

Elkhart, Ind. — Missionaries Mario Snyder met with tragedy Tuesday morning when their car collided head-on with another vehicle on the road between Mt. Pleasant and Scottsdale, Pa., about one mile out of Scottsdale.

Killed was Mrs. Barbara Snyder. Taken to the Frick Community Hospital in Mt. Pleasant were her husband, Mario, and their three children, Mary 11, Mark 8, and Anne 7. Mary suffered an arm injury, Anne a broken leg. Mario and Mark were released from the hospital on Tuesday evening.

The family was on its way to New York City where they were scheduled to leave for Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Friday, July 30. Mrs. Snyder's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul V. Snyder, Hesston, Kan. were also en route to New York to fly with their daughter and family to Argentina.

The Mario Snyder family had just spent a three-month furlough in the States, visiting communities in Kansas, Colorado, Ohio, Iowa, Illinois, Texas, and Ontario, Canada. This was to have been their second term of missionary service with Mennonite Board of Missions of Elkhart.

Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Snyder, parents of Mario and long-time missionaries in Argentina and Puerto Rico, received the tragic news at Corpus Christi, Texas, where they are presently serving in a pastorate.

Originally from Hesston, Kan., Mrs. Snyder was a graduate of Goshen College, and taught school several years before going to Argentina. She also assisted her husband in pastoring a church among the Latin Americans of Chicago for six and one-half years before their missionary assignment.

A remarkedly friendly person, she was active in women's work of the 22-member congregation she and her husband pastored in Argentina. “She had a very good relationship with the local people,” observed J. D. Graber, General Secretary of the Mission Board, after visiting the Snyders in Argentina on a recent trip.

The funeral was to be held at Scottdale either on Friday or Saturday.

• A memorial service for Mrs. Mario (Barbara) Snyder, missionary to Argentina who was killed in an auto accident near Scottdale, Pa., was held Sunday afternoon at the Whitestone Church in Hesston. The service was led by President Tilman Smith of Hesston College and Rev. Peter B. Wiebe, who took part in the funeral held at Scottdale on Friday. A tape recording of the funeral service was played. Services for Missionary Held at Scottdale

Scottdale, Pa. — A large number of relatives, friends and associates attended funeral services at the Scottdale Mennonite Church on Friday afternoon, July 30, for Mrs. Mario (Barbara) Snyder, 34, who was fatally injured in a highway accident near here July 27. The family had just left Scottdale for New York from where they were to leave for another term of missionary service in Argentina.

The service was in charge of A. J. Metzler, who also gave the sermon. Rev. Peter Wiebe of Hesston, Kan. presented a devotional meditation, and J. D. Graber, overseas missions secretary, gave a brief message. Burial was made in the Scottdale Cemetery.

Friends and relatives from Puerto Rico, South America, Ontario, Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois attended the services.

The two Snyder daughters, Mary and Anne, are both recovering satisfactorily from fractures suffered in the accident. Mr. Snyder and son Mark were less seriously hurt. Mrs. Snyder's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul V. Snyder of Hesston, who had planned to accompany the family to Argentina, are remaining in Scottdale for the present to care for their grandchildren.
