SAMUEL E. SMITH

Samuel E. Smith, son of John and Magdelina Schertz Smith, was born near Metamora, Ill. on March 20, 1873. At the time of his death, he was 88 years old.

He was married to Kathryn Schrock who died in 1907. On Feb. 10, 1910, in Cullon [sic Cullom], Ill. he was married to Emma Drange who survives.

Also surviving are five daughters, Edna (Mrs. Amos) Hinkle of Kansas City, Mo., Esther (Mrs. Ray) Schlabach of Washington, Ill., Ferne (Mrs. Roy) Umble of Goshen, Ind., Ruth (Mrs. Henry) Dick of Eureka, Ill., and Miss Beulah Smith of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Mrs. E. H. Oyer of Eureka, Ill.; one step sister, Mrs. Chris Gunden of Goshen, Ind.; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Raymond Henry, four brothers and three sisters.

Throughout his life he was a loyal and active member of the Metamora Mennonite Church and served for many years as teacher and as superintendent of the Sunday school. He was intensely interested in young people and in their future contribution to the church. He found great comfort and encouragement in reading the Scriptures, especially the Psalms.

The body was laid to rest in the Roanoke Cemetery.
