EVA SMITH
Eva (Nightingale) Smith was born Jan. 29, 1898 at Galva, Kan., to John Tobias and Anna (Boehs) Nightingale. She moved with her family to Oklahoma as a girl.
On April 16, 1919, she married Jonathan H. Smith at Grace Mennonite Church, Halstead, with Jacob Dirks officiating. Eight children were born to their home, and God blessed them with nearly 67 years of companionship. They lived in the Fairview area, where they farmed until 1984, when they moved to Moundridge Manor. Jonathan died Feb. 2, 1986.
Eva was a mother and housewife. She loved the outdoors, fishing and traveling. She had friends spread all over the world. She was a longtime correspondent for Mennonite Weekly Review. She was a member of the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite where she served her Lord for many years teaching Sunday school. She died July 25, 1993.
Eva is survived by four sons, Victor J. and his wife, Ruby, of Isabella, Okla.; Herman J. and his wife, Lena, of Ingalls, Alden J. and his wife, Claudine, of Detroit, Texas, and Wayne and his wife, Verna, of Smiths, Ala.; a daughter, Velma P. Boehs and her husband, Jess, of Moundridge; 22 grandchildren and 60 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; three sons, Vernon, Lee Roy and Franklin; and two great-grandchildren.
