One Dead, Three Hurt In South Dakota Crash

Freeman, S. D. — A two-car crash at an intersection near Chancellor, S. D. on Sept. 3 claimed the life of 18-year-old Beverly Smit of Davis, S. D. and injured members of the LaVern E. Kaufman family of Hurley.

Mrs. Kaufman, the former Joan Waltner, sustained a severe leg injury, cuts and bruises, and their year-old daughter, Peggy, has bones broken in one leg, cuts and bruises. Both were admitted to the Freeman Community Hospital, while Mr. Kaufman was treated and released.

The Smit girl was a passenger in a car driven by Darrell Johnson, 18, of Lennox, S. D., who also was hospitalized. Nancy Smit escaped serious injury.
