Well-Known Minister Dies In Indiana

NILES SLABAUGH SERVED HOWARD-MIAMI CHURCH FOR OVER 50 YEARS

Kokomo, Ind. — Niles M. Slabaugh, a minister of the Howard-Miami Mennonite (Old) Church near here for more than 50 years, died unexpectedly at his home May 14 about an hour after he suffered a coronary attack. He was 85.

A public school teacher in his early years as well as a singing teacher in Mennonite congregation, he farmed for a number of years along with his ministerial work. He was ordained to the ministry in 1904, and was active until his death.

Funeral services were conducted May 17 at the Howard-Miami Church.

NILES M. SLABAUGH

Niles M. Slabaugh, son of Samuel and Lydia Schrock Slabaugh, was born Feb. 17, 1876 in Miami County, Indiana; died suddenly at his home near Kokomo, Ind. on May 14, 1961 of a coronary attack after an hours' illness, age 85 years, three months and 27 days.

He was married to Sadie J. Hoffman of Clarksville, Mich. on March 29, 1906, who survives. Other survivors are three daughters and one son, Beatrice, Mrs. Orrin Nafziger of Hopedale, Ill., Vera, Mrs. Oliver Litwiller of Minier, Ill., Truman Slabaugh of Greentown, Ind., and Lois, Mrs. Gerald Mast of Kokomo; 15 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren; two brothers,Dr. Jancy [sic Jancey] S. Slabaugh of Nappanee, Ind. and Albert J. Slabaugh of Alto, Mich.; and one sister Lida [sic Lyda], Mrs. Simon Birkey of Amboy, Ind. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Ralph Emerson, and a granddaughter, Winnifred Miller.

Bro. Slabaugh was a public school teacher in his early years, as well as a singing teacher in Mennonite congregations. He retired as a farmer. He was a lifelong member of the Howard-Miami Mennonite Church near Kokomo, Ind. He was ordained to the Christian ministry at the Howard-Miami Church on Nov. 6, 1904 where he served for over 50 years.

His concerns were for the spiritual and physical welfare of his family as well as the church. He will be remembered by all who knew him for his hospitality and warm hand shakes. He enjoyed the fellowship of others; no one was a stranger in his presence.

Funeral services were conducted on May 17 at the Howard-Miami Mennonite Church. Ministers officiating were Homer North, Emanuel Hochstetler, and Anson Horner. Interment was made in the Shrock cemetery.
