Young Woman Killed In Highway Crash Near New Paris, Ind.
Goshen, Ind. — A car-truck crash south of New Paris on Highway 15 last Thursday evening claimed the life of Barbara Slabaugh, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eli J. Slabaugh of rural Milford and a junior at Nappanee High School. It was Elkhart County's ninth traffic fatality of 1963.
Miss Slabaugh was one of 17 young people of the Conservative Mennonite Church who were en route to Nappanee in three cars to sing Easter music. She was a passenger in a car driven by her fiance, 18-year-old Ira Nissley of Route 2, Nappanee, when it was involved in a near head-on collision with a truck pulling a trailer.
Miss Slabaugh was thrown out and was run over by the truck and trailer. Nissley sustained a broken hand and other injuries, while his other passengers, Ruth Ann Miller, 17, and Eleanor Slabaugh, 18, escaped with minor injuries.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Maple Lawn Mennonite Church northwest of New Paris.
