Two Deaths In Buhler Community

Buhler, Kans. — Jacob M. Siemens, 60, and Dietrich Penner, 59, both of the Buhler community, died of heart attacks at their homes here on Friday, Feb. 26.

Mr. Siemens, retired farmer who had been employed as a night watchman here, died shortly after eating lunch at his home. He was a lifelong resident of this community. Funeral services were conducted Monday, March 1, at the Hebron Mennonite church.

Mr. Penner, also a lifelong resident here, came in from the yard about 5:00 p.m. and complained of not feeling well. He sat down in a rocking chair and passed away. He was a member of the Bethany Nazarene church in Hutchinson.

JACOB M. SIEMENS

Jacob M. Siemens, son of Abraham and Elizabeth Rempel Siemens, was born April 13, 1893, in Reno County three miles east and one and one-fourth miles north of Buhler, Kansas. His mother died when he was born. He received his education in the Hill School district.

He was baptized on Sept. 21, 1919, by Elder A. M. Martens and became a member of the Hebron church.

He was married to Mary Ratzlaff on March 28, 1920. To this union were born six children, five sons and one daughter. Two children preceded him in death, Elmer at one year and Raymond at three years of age. In 1945 we were privileged to celebrate our 25th wedding aniversary [sic].

He followed the occupation of farming in Harvey County and was a successful farmer. He has always been of a lively disposition. He encountered some disappointments, difficulties and battles in life, but now has overcome all, and is in the heavenly home.

He was always willing to serve his friends and community and held various offices in the township, in the church, and served or school boards for many years.

He retired from active farming in the fall of 1953 and his home was established in the town of Buhler. Being able to do some work yet, he took the job of night-watchman in his home town.

Two years ago his health failed somewhat and he had to undergo two major operations, but recovered quite well.

On Feb. 26, 1954, during the noon hour he suddenly passed away. It was thought high blood pressure and a weak heart caused his sudden death, at the age of 60 years, 10 months and 13 days. He leaves to mourn his unexpected departure his sorrowing wife Mary; four children. Eldon [sic Alden] and wife of Beaumont, Texas, Abe Herald [sic Herold]and wife, Hutchinson, Herbert and Irma of the home; six grandchildren; five brothers, Abraham and wife of Burrton, Leonard J. and wife, Ben and wife Henry and wife, and Alvin and wife, all of Buhler; four sisters Lizzie, Mrs. J. J. Thiessen, Mary, Mrs. D. A. Thiessen, Anna, Mrs. D. B. Neufeld, and Katherine, Mrs. F. F. Gaeddert, all of Buhler; and many friends and relatives.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 1, 2:30 p.m. at the Hebron church east of Buhler, Rev. Roland Georing [sic Goering] officiating.
