Highway Accident Takes Life of Husband and Wife
MR. AND MRS. H. H. SIEMENS WERE ON WAY TO OKLAHOMA CONFERENCE
Reedley, Calif., Oct 19. — A double funeral service was held Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock in the Mennonite Brethren church of this city for Mr. and Mrs. Henry H. Siemens, who met death in an automobile crash Friday on the highway south of Bakersfield.
Rev. George Huebert, pastor of the Reedley church and Rev. Wiebe, of Shafter officiated at the service, which was conducted by the Cairns Funeral Home. Interment was in the Reedley cemetery.
Mr. and Mrs. Siemens, accompanied by Mrs. Sarah Bergen were on their way to Corn, Oklahoma to attend the general conference of the Mennonite Brethren churches, scheduled to open this week. As they approached the intersection of the Edison and Wheel Patch [sic Weedpatch] highways four miles east of Bakersfield their car collided headon with a gasoline truck driven by A. L. Carney of Lodi.
Mrs. Siemens was killed instantly and Mr. Siemens died an hour later at San Joaquin Hospital in Bakersfield. His skull was fractured. Mrs. Bergen's legs were crushed in the accident and later it was found each was fractured. The driver of the truck escaped with minor injuries. At the Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield where he was taken for first aid treatment, he stated that he had loaded his truck at the El Tejon refinery at Weed Patch and started for Lodi. As he made the turn west into the Edison Highway he saw the Siemens car suddenly turn directly into the path of his truck.
The children of Mr. and Mrs. Siemens did not learn of the tragedy until the next morning, when Arthur Siemens, who is employed in a local packing plant was told by some of his associates they had heard over the radio that his parents had an accident near Bakersfield. — Reedley Exponent.
